Walkers is making a major change to the packaging of one of its popular lunchtime snacks.

The nation’s favourite crisp maker – owned by the company PepsiCo – will be changing the packaging on its Snack-a-Jacks products to make them more environmentally friendly. Snack-a-Jack multipacks will soon have paper outer bags with the move hoping to reduce the brand’s use of virgin plastic by 65 tonnes per year.

The new packaging will be rolled out over the coming weeks and will be across Snack-a-Jacks Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream and Chive and BBQ flavours. it has not been confirmed which supermarkets will stock the newly packaged products first and we will update this article when we know more.

Shoppers will be able to recycle the new paper packaging in home recycling bins which PepsiCo says will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions of each pack by 52%.

Hannah Freeman, marketing manager for Snack-a-Jacks, said: “As the UK’s favourite rice cake brand, we’re proud to be introducing even more reasons to love our delicious snacks. Easily recycled with your usual household paper recycling, these new outer packs can be disposed of thoughtfully with little fuss. We hope our devoted fans of Snack-A-Jacks will enjoy this small but important change we’ve made to make their snacking experience even more enjoyable at home.”

The latest move from PepsiCo follows the success of paper packaging on its Walkers Baked multipacks last year. It forms part of PepsiCo’s “Positive, the health and sustainability transformation plan” which includes a plan to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

Across PepsiCo Europe, the company plans to replace all plastic packaging in crisp and snack products by 2030. This would impact popular products such as Snack A Jacks, Walkers, Doritos, Quavers, Wotsits, and Pipers.

Gareth Callan, UK packaging sustainability lead at PepsiCo said: “Our outer paper multi-bag packs are working well on Walkers Baked, giving us the confidence to roll out this format across more of our snacks brands. The new packaging will help further reduce our non-fossil plastic use, while also helping to lower our carbon footprint as we work towards our commitment to creating a world where packaging never becomes waste”.
