Shoppers went wild for Tesco’s retractable awning, but we found one at Wayfair that’s even larger, offering plenty of shade from the sun and making a great alternative to a parasol
We might be having a brief lull in the sunshine but it’s set to make a return in no time, and if you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, adding a little shady spot is essential. It keeps you out of the direct sun, lets you work al fresco and still be able to see your screen, and keeps you cool whilst eating or relaxing.
Whilst a parasol is great, it doesn’t offer a huge amount of coverage from the sun, which is why a retractable awning is a fantastic addition, letting you adjust how much shade you get. Shoppers have recently gone wild for Tesco’s retractable awning, but we found one that we think is even better at Wayfair.

The Wayfair Awning Iron Post Set is only £10 more expensive than the Tesco model at £139.99, but comes in two measurements of either 245cm x 600 cm or 245cm x 450cm, offering more shade and coverage than Tesco’s 200cm x 150cm. This makes it ideal if you have a larger area to cover, such as a patio or decking, and you can of course alter how much or little of the awning you roll out.
It comes with a rotary base which can be rotated 360 degrees for maximum adjustment, and offers plenty of cooling shade for your outdoor space. You can also choose from either black posts with a white awning, or white posts and a white awning depending on your garden’s style.
The posts are also made from a very sturdy iron, which means they should be long lasting and withstand plenty of summers – and winters. Which is why the awning is also handy year round, offering shelter from the rain so you can still sit outdoors no matter what the weather is.
If you want some more colour options, we also spotted this Greenbay 2 m x 1.5m DIY Patio Retractable Manual Awning on Amazon, which is currently on sale down from £125.99 to £119.99. There are eight different colours and patterns to choose from, and is made from aluminium which is more lightweight than the iron frame of Wayfair’s.
If you did want something that’s easy to move around or only have a small area that you want to add shade to, you can of course pick up a parasol instead. This Elements 3m Cantilever Parasol from Dunelm is currently on sale down from £79 to £55.30, comes in three colours and has a crank that lets you adjust the position easily.
