Three professional taste testers appeared on Channel 5’s The Big Taste Test to compare an Heinz Tomato Ketchup with Asda and M&S own brands and couldn’t believe the results
Taste testers have been left in shock after comparing Heinz’s iconic Tomato Ketchup to two supermarket brands.
In Channel 5’s Supermarket Home Brands: The Staple Food Taste Test, Parveen Kahn, Aisling Walsh, Eray Beyi, took on the challenge of tasting and comparing the sauces from Marks & Spencer, Heinz and Asda.
While blindfolded, each individual dipped their chips into the separate pots of ketchup and shared their thoughts to presenter Rachel Fofie.
With the first ketchup taste, all three agreed that it was good, but preferred the second option.
Describing the taste, Eray said it was “not too sweet” and “not too tangy”, while Aisling believed it was “a bit richer” and that the tomatoes tasted “more natural”.
Sharing her thoughts, Parveen agreed it was “more tangy” and predicted that it could be “a good own brand”. Onto the third sauce, all three preferred this taste which was described as “less tangy”, “really nice” and a good all-rounder.
Following the taste test, the three judges took off their blindfolds and were told which sauce was from where. After being informed that the first one was from Marks & Spencer, Rachel went on to reveal that the second, which they believed to be a supermarket brand, was in fact Heinz.
“No way,” Parveen replied, stunned, while Eray asked: “Are you serious?!” He went on to joke: “I feel like I’ve failed my family, I’ve failed everyone. I was a real ketchup fiend growing up.”
The trio grew even more shocked after discovering that the price of their preferred ketchup was also around £2.40 cheaper than Heinz.
Elsewhere in the episode, the three taste testers also favoured Aldi’s Bramwell’s beans, which costs just 42p, compared to Heinz’s £1.40.
Additionally, Eray said he will be sticking with the budget supermarket after preferring Aldi’s “game-changing” West Country Farmhouse Extra Mature Barber’s Cheddar to Pilgrims Choice.
