A mum-to-be and her partner had chosen the perfect name for her baby, and she was left miffed when she found out that a member of her family had stolen the name for their puppy

Choosing a moniker for your little one can be a real struggle, as you want something that represents them perfectly, but you’ve never met them – but what would you do if a family member stole your idea…for their dog?

Often, parents may keep their lips sealed when it comes to the name they’re going to choose – sometimes because they’re not 100% sure about their decision, and other times because they don’t want anybody to nab their idea. But they may choose to share it with a select group of nearest and dearest.

And after the woman shared the name with her family, she was left feeling heartbroken when they chose the name for the puppy they’d just bought, completely ruining it for the mum-to-be.

Taking to Reddit, the pregnant woman captioned the post: “FML – close family member just named their new puppy with our baby name.” She explained: “Just like the title said. I’ve seen stories like this but never thought I would be here. They got the first and middle names, spelling exactly how we were planning.

“We haven’t publicly announced the name. The only people that we told are the grandparents. Both mum and mother-in-law are not known for their ability to keep secrets, though it has been sworn up and down that the name was not leaked.

“I am disappointed, but trying not to be too dramatic. That is why I am here and not texting family. At this point, I’m leaning towards just using it anyway. Neither of us owns the name.”

Since sharing her news, people praised her for being the bigger person, and encouraging her to use the name regardless of the betrayal. One person advised: “This is obvious to you and your immediate family, but in the span of the baby’s life and all the people they’ll meet, almost no one will know this.”

Sharing their own experience, a second wrote: “When we got a cat a few years ago, my single sister at the time was a little disappointed to hear the name because it’s one she wanted to use in the future. I told her she should feel free to use it still because almost no one else besides our family will know the cat and baby share a name. Also by the time she has kids who even knows how long they will both be alive at the same time.”
