He said he’ll be ‘monitoring’ the situation to see whether we see Storm Amy ‘before we say goodbye to September’
A top weather expert thinks there’s a 50/50 chance London could be battered by a storm next week. Jim Dales of the British Weather Services told us changes to weather in the English Channel means next week the capital could feel the full force of Storm Amy.
He said he’ll be ‘monitoring’ the situation to see whether we see Storm Amy ‘before we say goodbye to September’. Expert Jim added the elements would be ‘swinging around’ until the end of the month.
But before then we’re in luck as London will be blessed with ‘t-shirt’ weather as temperatures will max out at 23C in Thursday (September 18) before reaching a comfortable 24C this Friday (September 19). It’ll be cooler on Saturday (September 20) with the possibility of light showers in the afternoon, according to The Met Office, but BBC Weather is more optimistic about the weekend.
Though Mr Dales clarified it will ‘take some push’ for thermostats to dip beneath 10C, adding this would be the case under October.
Have any weather warnings been issued by The Met Office?
Not covering London, but yellow weather warnings have been issued in Wales as parts of it may be drenched in heavy downpours over the coming days, the Met Office said. Wet and windy conditions are set to continue with alerts for rain put in place for parts of Wales on Wednesday.
It comes after windy weather swept across the country and gusts of up to 80mph were recorded by the Met Office overnight on Sunday (September 14). Forecasters have warned that up to 60mm of rain may fall within six hours in one warning area, which covers north-west Wales including Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd and Powys from from 3am to 12pm on Wednesday.
The second warning, which is in place from 6am to 11pm on Wednesday, covers south and south-west Wales where up to 70mm of rainfall is expected largely on south-west hills with up to 40mm elsewhere, the Met Office said.
Areas affected include Swansea, Carmarthen and parts of Cardiff.
Where to buy good umbrellas
September’s quickly coming a close and with infrequent bouts of sun it’s getting wet out there. We’ve had rain warnings and thunderstorm warnings recently too, and with Jim Dales’ potentially very bleak take on things, umbrellas are going to be a possibly major ally . Umbrellas are a key part of British culture at this point, but some of them simply aren’t up to fighting the weather we’ve got.
A strong winds can flip an umbrella inside out, and big gusts have been known to flip umbrellas and rendering them useless. But some brands claim to make ‘weather-proof’ umbrellas, which are meant to withstand strong winds and their accompanying gusts. And most of those brands live on Amazon, where shoppers are known to share their feelings in brutally honest reviews.
A search for ‘windproof umbrella’ yields more than 60,000 results on the shopping site. So here at MyLondon, we’ve sorted through them to find the best-rated of the bunch.
