Wetherspoons has announced plans to open several new pubs across the UK this year, including a branch in Basildon, Essex, with the opening date now confirmed. JD Wetherspoon, boasting over 800 pubs and more than 50 hotels nationwide, is a common sight on many high streets. Their six upcoming pubs will feature unique locations such as a repurposed industrial site in West London and a former 1920s cinema in a market town.
Four of these new venues will also offer pub gardens for outdoor dining and drinking. Despite seeing a rise in food and drink sales towards the end of 2024, the chain decided to close several pubs last year, including The Spon Gate in Coventry, citing ‘commercial reasons’ for the closure.
However, this year has already witnessed the launch of new branches in places like Marlow, Buckinghamshire, London Waterloo Station, and even the Isle of Man – marking the first Wetherspoon pub on the island, reports Essex Live. The forthcoming Basildon pub, named The Sigered, King Of Essex, located at 8–10 East Walk, is being developed at a cost of £2,750,000. Its name pays homage to the last King of Essex, Sigered, who reigned from 798–825.

The opening date for this new establishment has been confirmed as September 30. It’s worth noting that Basildon previously had another Wetherspoons branch, Moon on The Square, which shut its doors in late 2022. Wetherspoon has forged a partnership with Haven Holidays, aiming to broaden its footprint within their holiday parks. The inaugural on-site Wetherspoon was launched last year at Primrose Valley in Yorkshire, followed by four more in 2025, including one at Devon Cliffs park, Haven’s site, as reported by the Mirror.
A representative from Wetherspoon confirmed future openings at additional Haven sites, though specific dates were not disclosed. The latest ‘Spoons’ additions are situated in a variety of fascinating locations. The newly inaugurated Walham Green in Fulham is nestled in the former entrance and ticket hall of Fulham Broadway tube station, offering railway-themed decor that train enthusiasts will undoubtedly appreciate.
Another fresh establishment, The Sun Wharf in London Bridge, might sound familiar to those who have visited a well-known family attraction in the capital. For 39 years, the building housed the London Dungeon, which moved to County Hall on the Southbank in 2013. While the horror-themed decorations have been removed, the stunning brick arches remain intact.
Venturing beyond London, new launches include The Chiltern in Beaconsfield, originally a 500-seat Picture House. The cinema first opened its doors in 1927, providing entertainment for film lovers for many years. It later transitioned into a Prezzo, which has since closed down, and is slated to reopen as a Wetherspoons this December.
