Artificial intelligence is a hot topic right now, and for good reason.

The technology behind engines such as OpenAI and ChatGPT has evolved really fast, and people are concerned this means it could be coming for their job next. The good news is that there will always be jobs that require a human being – so if you train for them now, your career will be futureproof.

The team at MoneyMagpie have come up with ideas for ways to secure your career even as AI becomes more popular.

How is AI changing jobs?

AI is being used in all kinds of capacities across the world. It can help analyse and change soil conditions for farming to increase crop yield. It streamlines manufacturing processes in factories. It helps people do their boring administrative work.

You’ve used AI even if you’re anti the idea! A spell checker or predictive text is an early version, and if you remember Clippy the Microsoft paperclip that’s another example. If you’ve ever used a web chat to contact a company, it’s likely your initial contact will be handled by an AI bot.

But AI is still limited in things it can do. While it might be able to write computer code, or produce a novel-length text, it doesn’t have its own critical thinking (yet). It can only work with the data provided to it. However, there are some jobs AI won’t ever be able to do. If you want to secure your career in an ever-changing AI world, consider switching to one of these jobs.

Gardening and landscaping

If you have a natural tendency towards having green fingers, gardening could be a job for you. Sure, there are robot mowers these days, and apps can identify plants from a single photo – but the real hands-on work requires a human touch.

Gardening isn’t just for helping people maintain their private gardens, either. You could become a heritage gardener working at a National Trust property, or a commercial gardener for parklands. If you’re a fan of trees, arborists require specialist training but can earn a good salary in return.

Chefs and kitchen staff

Perhaps you have a great sense of taste or can recreate secret recipes from taste alone. Or you might just enjoy the vibe of working in a commercial kitchen (it’s not always like The Bear – but it can be). The hours are long and it can be hard work, but those who enjoy working with food find it rewarding.

You could also consider setting up your own catering business for weddings and events. Or, if that sounds like too much to take on, consider investing in a food truck and touring summer festivals and Christmas markets. The days are long but the rewards high.

Beauty and massage therapists

If there’s one thing AI will never be able to recreate, it’s the comfort of a relaxing stone massage or the relief of a tough sports massage. Human touch is important for all people, and can do wonders for our wellbeing.

Massage and beauty therapies will always be in high demand. People like to pamper themselves and there’s nothing less appealing than a spa run by robots! And while the medical field is making advances in AI surgeries, aestheticians will still be in high demand for beauty treatments like fillers and semi-permanent makeup.

Management roles

Imagine a business completely run by AI. There is still a need for people to maintain machines, ensure they work correctly, and that they serve customer or client needs. This is why people will always be needed in senior roles – logistics, planning, and day-to-day business management will ensure more AI-based jobs run smoothly.

If you have a great mind for planning and implementation, and can identify market needs and pitfalls, a business management degree or qualification could set you in good stead for an AI future.

Transport drivers

Yes, we live in a world of electric cars and self-driving taxis. However, it’s going to be a very long time before trains, buses, and even aeroplanes are manned by computers. While the technology might not be far off existing, there is a challenge when it comes to getting people to trust it.

People want their taxi driven by a real person, a train driver on board responsible in an emergency, and a pilot who can safely land the plane if something goes wrong. The same goes for logistics – long haul truck drivers will be in high demand for a long time, as self-driving 18-wheelers aren’t a possibility any time soon.

Create your own job

If none of the above appeal to you, remember that we live in a world where you can create your own work, too. This is where the age of AI could be a benefit to you, as you can use it for streamlining business processes, to design your marketing materials, and more as you launch a business.
