Parts of the UK will be treated to a partial solar eclipse today (Monday, April 8). The rare event will see much of North America plunged into darkness with a full solar eclipse, with the UK getting just a glimpse.
About 6 per cent of the sun will be obscured in Edinburgh, 12 per cent in Glasgow, 28.1 per cent in Belfast, and 3.1 per cent in Liverpool, while Cardiff and Manchester are among the British cities likely to have the best potential views, along with County Donegal in Ireland.

If you’re hoping for a full solar eclipse in the UK soon, don’t hold your breath. The next total eclipse of the sun visible from the UK is in September 2090.
However, if you’re willing to travel to mainland Europe, there will be another one in 2026 that is visible in northern Spain, tracking up to Iceland, reports TimeAndDate.com. Because the path of the total eclipse isn’t a straight line, it will mostly miss the UK.
If you want to catch the total eclipse, you should visit the Balearic Islands, Bilbao, Santander, Zaragoza and more.
The last time a total solar eclipse was seen from the UK was in 1999, although the only place to witness totality was Cornwall.
