A hairstylist has begged people to stop washing their hair before going to the hairdresser’s – and there’s a very good reason for it which you might end up thanking them for later
One of the many joys of going to the hairdresser is the fact that they wash your hair, but some people might feel embarrassed about rocking up with greasy locks, so do it themselves beforehand.
You might feel like you’re doing your hairdresser a favour by washing your hair yourself before you come to your appointment, but according to a hairstylist, the opposite is true. Professional hairstylist Rhys, who regularly shares tips to his @rhysandhair TikTok account, recently asked customers to avoid doing this in the future.
In his plea, he asked: “Why do clients still feel compelled to wash their hair before coming to an appointment? I’ve had two this morning alone. Not only is it a waste of their time, but loves, I want your hair dirty. I want your hair oily.
“Not only is it my job to wash your hair and make it clean and sparkling and smell lovely, but those oils in your scalp are protecting your scalp against colour. We are putting chemicals on your head and this oil and dirt and that little build up is protecting your hair.”
According to Rhys, the oils and build-up on your scalp are protecting your head from the chemicals they might be applying to the hair. He added: “Let me tell you, if a client comes in and they’ve washed their hair they get a slap on the wrist from me”.
In a message to other people in the industry, he added: “Make sure you educate your clients, you don’t want them coming in with clean hair especially when you are about to do a colour service.”
Social media users were shocked by the revelation, and some explained they felt embarrassed to go into the salon with greasy hair. One person wrote: “I have heard other posts of hairdressers slamming/making fun of clients who hadn’t washed their hair before appointments.”
Another agreed, saying: “I do because the amount of hairdressers on here that shame people. ‘Things we wish our clients did or didn’t do’ and going in with greasy hair is always top of the list.” While others explained they were already doing, this: “Never wash my hair before I go hairdresser’s.”
Another said: “I won’t wash my hair for a good 5-6 days before I go to the salon. What’s the point?! Can’t believe people do wash their hair before going?!”
