Detectives want to speak to the man pictured urgently

A CCTV appeal has been launched after a would-be bag thief attempted to rob a London Underground passenger in Havering. The victim was topping up her Oyster card at Elm Park station at around 9pm on Tuesday, September 19 when a man approached her from behind.

He then grabbed her handbag and tried to make off but the woman was able to evade his grasps. The man responsible is yet to be arrested over a month later.

Detectives from the British Transport Police (BTP) are now turning to the public for help. The force has released footage of a man they wish to speak to in connection.

The image shows a man with glasses and a short black beard. He appears to be in his 20s or early, and is wearing a black jacket and blue baseball hat.

The appeal comes days after MyLondon reported a bag snatching in Croydon. The culprit struck at the George Street tram stop, pulling a woman to the ground as he fled.

Anyone who recognises the man is urged to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 169 of 19 September. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111 or the charity’s website.
