Moving into a new house can be a bit of a whirlwind, but after a few months, you usually get the lay of the land. However, one woman was left gobsmacked when she stumbled upon a secret room in her basement, despite having lived in the house for “years”.

She shared the house has been in her husband’s family since it was built in the early 1900s and, as you’d expect, it’s seen quite a few changes over the years. On Reddit, she explained: “It originally was the house of his great grandmother, than great uncle, then his parents used it for a small business, than us. One day I casually mentioned to my mother-in-law how the internet is obsessed with antique canning jars, and she suggested I check out the canning room in the basement.”

Baffled, she admitted she’d been in the basement “plenty of times” and knew it to be an empty space with no doors or windows.

She continued: “I ventured down anyway to humour her and sure enough. What I had assumed was just a wood lined wall of the basement under the stairs was actually a secret room.

“I found the door, and it had a small unassuming padlock on it, and I noped the f*** out. When my spouse got home I told him about it and he cut the lock off and we peaked inside.”

As soon as the door swung open, her eyes were drawn to a row of antique turn-of-the-century blue canning jars.

But that’s not all – she also found “a few antique 1950s cans of paint., old booze bottles, other odds and ends, and a mummified mouse body”.

She said: “Nothing too exciting but I was pretty amazed I had lived in this house for years without knowing this room even existed.”

She isn’t the only one to have stumbled upon a surprise in their home.

Another Reddit user commented on the post saying: “There was a small cubby underneath the short basement stairs, found old business papers and a box of very old wine.

“We, being early 20s, drank it all. Didn’t taste great, kind of musty, like drinking an old dusty library, but it did the job.”

Meanwhile, another user shared: “My parent’s/my childhood home. They had the house built in 1981 and we moved there in 1982. Sometime in the late 1990s we had the attic over the two-car garage converted into a full master bedroom with the roof raised, laundry room, bathroom etc.

“While they were doing the renovation and construction they found liquor bottles from the GC who was basically an alcoholic and would drink on the job building the original house.

“He used to hide them in the framework behind insulation etc. Was pretty funny to see.”
