A woman in her 50s died in on the M23 yesterday (Wednesday, September 10). Police were alerted to concern for a person’s safety on the southbound carriageway of the motorway between M25 (Junction 8) and Gatwick Airport (Junction 9) at about 6am.

South East Coast Ambulance Service attended but the pedestrian was pronounced dead on the carriageway. Her next of kin have been informed. An investigation is underway. There have been no arrests.

The motorway was blocked in both directions for two hours before northbound traffic was eventually released. Traffic cameras at the scene showed people walking along the opposite empty carriageway before being told to get back in their cars by police.

Lanes 3 and 4 of the southbound carriageway reopened eight hours after police were first called. Lanes 1 and 2 remained closed into the evening on Wednesday but have since reopened.

Surrey Police is making a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to police contact with the deceased in the days prior to the incident.
