A woman has shared her tried and tested hack to stop bananas from spoiling – and people can’t wait to try it. All you need is some kitchen roll and a splash of water
Raise your hands if you’ve ever fallen victim to your bananas turning to utter mush just days after you’ve bought them.
While Brits have long loved the humble banana – the common fruit is notorious for being rock solid one second and spoilt the next. Unless you plan on baking copious amounts of banana bread (like everyone did during lockdown) the over-ripe fruits end up getting binned.
However, one woman swears by her tried and tested hack to keep bananas fresher for a ‘lot longer’. This method can be done in a matter of seconds and only requires one thing: kitchen roll.
Taking to TikTok, user Dyanne showed how she has kept her six-day old bananas looking fresh. “What I do is wash the bananas in cold water and then I wrap the tops in a kitchen towel, and keep them wet every single morning,” she said.
“These are the same bananas I showed you six days ago, look… So you know what, it works… Your bananas will keep fresh a lot longer.” You can pick up kitchen roll at a slew of online retailers and supermarkets – and don’t need to splash out on the good stuff. You can pick up a ‘jumbo’ roll at Morrisons for just £1.35.
Many viewers took to the comments section to hail the hack, with one user describing it as ‘insane’. “Thanks for the tip, next trip to the store I’m getting bananas and trying this,” another added.

Professional chef Peter Sidwell has an alternative method to stopping your bananas from spoiling quickly. “Bananas actually release a gas called ethylene from their stems which ripens then and surrounding fruit, making them go rotten faster,” the expert said.
Therefore, he recommends keeping your bananas separate from other fruits such as apples, pears and melons – which are ‘particularly sensitive’ to this gas. Sidwell also urges Brits to use a preserving bag to keep their bananas in the fridge. However, this should only be done once they have ripened, otherwise they will remain ‘hard and tasteless’.
