A woman has hailed her ‘very middle class’ charity shop find – a Le Cresuet casserole dish that left scores of people flabbergasted by the bargain price she paid for it
Charity shops are renowned for their bargains and hidden gems, as one woman came to learn to her delight recently.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the bargain hunter proudly shared a snap of her find in her kitchen – a blue casserole dish with its £29.99 price tag still attached. “£30 in my local charity shop,” she gushed in a caption. “I scuttled away with it like I’d pulled off a very middle class heist.”
And asked how much it retails for brand new, she continued: “I may have just casually checked the Le Creuset website: £315!” Le Cresuet is a French-Belgian cookware manufacturer, specialising in cast-iron products.
“I’m a great fan of Le Creuset all mine is Volcanic Orange. You got a bargain, worth well over a hundred,” penned one X user, prompting the buyer to admit: “I feel a bit guilty but keep telling myself I deserve this!”
Another person quipped: “When they write about privilege in future, this will be the example! Only in a fancy area could a charity shop shopper have access to pans this fancy. You’re perpetuating the cycle! Now, give me the French pot!”
A third joked: “Will cost you another few hundred to buy the inevitable matching set. Slippery slope keep us posted.” However, the woman triumphantly explained: “That’s the awesome thing: I already HAVE the matching set, it was a wedding present. And I found this one on our anniversary! We got a set as a wedding present and I always wanted to get the larger casserole too. Weirdly enough it was actually our anniversary yesterday.”
A fourth added: “That’s gorgeous, I’d have felt like Lovejoy spotting a bit of jade if I saw that in my locals. Still pinch myself at the Agatha Christie collection I snapped up for £12.50 or something.”
Whilst a fifth explained: “A charity shop Le Creuset is a happy memory in any family’s lore – my flatmate found ours, quickly we realised food cooked in it tastes better somehow.”
