A woman has shared three ways to save ripe bananas from going to waste – and it’s safe to say you might never look at the fruit in the same way again

Bananas, the sweet and creamy fruit that’s a favourite for snacks and smoothies, are notorious for turning brown in no time at all. This often leads to perfectly good bananas being chucked away before they’re even enjoyed.

But it turns out those browning bananas aren’t ready for the bin just yet there’s still plenty of life left in them to help you cut down on food waste.

A savvy social media user, known as @purewow, has taken to the platform with a viral message urging followers to “stop wasting your ripe bananas”. She’s dishing out three clever tricks to extend the life of this versatile fruit.

The video, which has already racked up over 700 likes, features her first tip: “You can peel them, put them in a baggie, and freeze them for later to add to your smoothies.”

Next up, she demonstrates how to whip up some banana milk by simply blending the fruit with water, peeling included. “You can make banana milk with just bananas and water and blend. This comes out so creamy and you can use it for just about anything,” she explains.

For her final suggestion, she proposes a nifty idea for coffee lovers looking to keep their drinks chilled without diluting the flavour during the warmer months. “Make banana ice cubes to add to your coffee for the perfect creamer,” she advises.

TikTok was abuzz with reactions to a video that left viewers gobsmacked, prompting them to flood the comments with their own tips on saving overripe bananas from the bin. One user enthused: “I do frozen banana with almond and oat milk blended it’s my favourite breakfast.”

Another chimed in with a simple: “Love bananas,” while someone else shared: “I did banana milk.”

A fourth person pointed out a delicious option that wasn’t mentioned: “BANANNABREAD!!!!” The original poster responded, clearly tempted: “Now I’m in the mood for some.”

As bananas age and brown, they sweeten up due to the conversion of starch into sugars, becoming softer and more suitable for baking and blending into smoothies. Despite their less-than-perfect appearance, these brown bananas are not only edible but also ideal for sweeter treats because of the intensified sugar content and creamy texture.
