Salmon can be tough to cook correctly, but one woman has recommended a rather unorthodox appliance you can use to get it ‘perfect’ every single time – without an oven
If you struggle to make the perfect salmon, then one woman has just the tip for you – whack it in the dishwasher.
Yes, that’s right, the TikToker reckons that if you want “perfect salmon every time” then there’s no use turning to your beloved oven, or trusty air fryer – you’re actually best wrapping the salmon fillet up in foil, and popping it in the appliance that’s usually used to…clean dirty crockery.
Elaine, who posts on TikTok as @elainecarolskitchen swears by the quirky cooking method, and when she pulls it out of the dishwasher, it does look extremely tasty.
“Start with your salmon fillet, add some lemon as desired, then I use some fresh herbs like dill and rosemary”, she instructed. Then she added garlic and butter, and salt and pepper to taste. “Be sure to wrap your salmon until it’s airtight, you don’t want any holes or seams open in this”, Elaine shared.
Then she said you should “put it in the top rack of your dishwasher and put it in for a full cycle on hot water and a heated dry.” She recommended that it should get to 145C.
“Once done, pull it out, open it up, and enjoy”, she said, as the clip showed some delicious-looking “perfectly cooked salmon”, which she served with asparagus. Elaine then said: “So good, you’ve gotta try this”.
In the comments, however, some were sceptical about Elaine’s cooking method, with one joking: “I don’t have a dishwasher, do you think this would work in the oven?” Someone else pointed out: “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”
“Pro tip – add detergent for a refreshing spicy kick”, a TikToker joked, and another made people laugh when he wrote: “I just throw it in my hot tub!! I don’t even wrap it!”
“You can’t eat at everybody’s house”, a sceptic penned, with another writing: “If your dishwasher doesn’t work just stick it in the toilet and flush a few times. The water will heat it to perfection.”
Opinion is divided on whether you can cook in the dishwasher, however, with some saying it’s perfectly fine, and others recommending you avoid it and opt for more traditional cooking methods.
Dishwasher salmon is MasterChef judge John Torode-approved, and Heston Blumenthal and Oprah Winfrey are also fans of the quirky method. Author of the book ‘Cooking in the Dishwasher’ Lisa Casali says you just need the “will to experiment”, and to wrap things up properly, reports MailOnline.
However, Consumer Reports consulted LG spokesperson Taryn Brucia about this hack, and Brucia says that their products are not tested to be food-safe, and will most likely not heat fish sufficiently enough to kill bacteria like salmonella. “Water temperature will not be as consistent in a dishwasher as compared to a stove”, Brucia warned.
