Usually, in life, the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ applies – but one woman was left horrified when she paid to upgrade her seat to premium economy and was left squished in
A woman was left seriously disappointed after she forked out extra cash for what she assumed would be a better plane seat, only to board the plane and be miffed at the size of it, likening it to a “kangaroo’s pouch”.
Brooke Johnson, who posts content about her travels on her Instagram @brookedoeseverything, explained that normally she doesn’t have an issue with flying as she’s so petite standing at five feet two, but when she upgraded her seat travelling with Avianca, she was shocked.
She captioned her post: “I typically don’t have a problem flying because I’m so small I can put up with a lot of things. Just sparked a lot of questions for me. Mainly how is this possible?”
She explained she was on the plane for three and a half hours and it had “no wifi, no reclining seat, no movies, the tray table couldn’t fully go down, no free drinks, and no leg room”.
In the video, she explained it was Avianca Plus, and the seat looked tiny. “This can’t be real”, she gasped, saying that she didn’t “know how anyone over the size of five foot two fits in here”, explaining that the man who was sitting next to her was practically touching her knee.
Brooke joked that she’d “never been so close to someone” in her life, saying it was the “smallest airline” she’d “ever been on”. She said: “If the plane goes down I don’t even have room to turtle [brace].”
Avianca’s website says: “When boarding, you may encounter planes that look different on the inside; this is not our final experience. Some already have seats: Premium, Plus, and Economy; this process will be completed by the second quarter of 2024. Please note that some of our planes only have Economy seats.”
In the comments, someone wrote: “Wooowwwww that plane sucks! That was premium economy??” Brooke responded: “Yeah. No Wi-Fi, the seat didn’t recline, you had to pay for water”.
Others slated her, saying that she got what she paid for, writing: “You get what you paid for. You wanted to save money and the Airline wanted to save the space. Stop being cheap”, but Brooke replied: “I am simply blaming the airline for packing people in and overcharging for something they call premium economy when it’s not what they said it was.”
Another questioned: “If that’s the plus seat what are the regular seats like?!”, but someone came to the airline’s defence, writing: “We fly Avianca regular seats quite often and they’re actually very spacious. Me and my two children can stretch out and sleep on our overnight flights. Not sure how this lady has no space in a premium seat.”
The Mirror has contacted Avianca Airline for a comment.
