A woman believed she had a mouse problem when she heard scratching coming from inside her walls, but when she found out what the noise actually was, she was gobsmacked

Hearing scratching coming from your walls could be a sign you have mice in your home. Mice love to hide out in dark and warm places, and if you have them in your house, you’ll most often be able to hear them scratching around under your floorboards or in your walls at night when they’re most active.

Other signs of mice include seeing droppings, as well as greasy marks along walls where their fur has rubbed against them. But one woman who thought she had mice in her home actually got the shock of her life when she discovered something else entirely was making the scratching she could hear in her wall.

Mila Sophie shared a video on TikTok in which she said she heard scratching coming from her heating shaft one night, and opened up the door on the shaft, expecting to see a mouse or a rat.

But when she opened it up to take a look, she found something very different – a hamster.

In her video, she wrote: “It’s 11pm, and you hear some scratching out of the heating shaft, thinking there’s a rat in it.”

The hamster stood completely frozen when the door was opened, shocked that its hiding place had been discovered. Mila was able to rescue it and put it in a bucket, where she fed it slices of carrot and a few other veggies.

In a follow-up video, Mila also said she doesn’t know where the hamster came from, but she assumes it belongs to someone in her block of flats and it somehow escaped and ended up in her heating shaft. She also said she had been hearing scratching for days, but every time she went to check the shaft, there was nothing there.

She said: “Since Tuesday, I’ve been hearing these scratches on the wall here, and the cats were going crazy whenever they heard it. I was a little scared to open it [the heating shaft] by myself, so I was always waiting for my fiancé to come home. But every time he came home, the noises were gone, and we couldn’t see anything.”

Mila also revealed she and her fiancé have now put a sign up in their apartment building asking if anyone has lost a hamster so they can try to reunite the animal with its owner, but they’ve had no responses yet.

She added: “So far, he’s living in our shower, and we’re hoping that the owner might call us. My fiancé also talked to a few neighbours, but no one is missing a hamster.”

Commenters on the post urged Mila to take care of the hamster until they can reunite it with its owner, and if that isn’t possible, they asked that she keep the hamster herself. However, they insisted she be careful with her cats, as cat saliva can be toxic to rodents.

One person said: “Aww, poor little hamster. I’m glad you helped him!”

Another added: “Please do not allow your cat to interact with it. Cat saliva is toxic to rodents and will kill it.”

A third posted: “I swear he’s chunky, he’s definitely been well looked after. I hope he’s reunited with his humans soon, the little cutie is very well socialised and not scared at all.”
