A woman has threatened to cancel her best friend’s baby shower after being told her pets should not be allowed at the event – leaving their 20-year friendship on edge
A woman has told her best friend find a new venue for her baby shower after she was told to keep her pets “locked away”.
It’s such an exciting day when someone announces they are expecting their first child. It is common in today’s age for friends and families to host a baby shower for an expectant mother to celebrate the new chapter before the baby arrives. But, taking on the responsibility of hosting means lots of organising and making sure the mum-to-be feels celebrated.
But recently a pregnant woman and her best friend – who offered to host the event at her home – have fallen out over who is on the invitation list. The host has been left baffled as the mum-to-be asked her not to allow her Labrador and Golden Retriever to roam around the party. The dilemma has sparked debate online.
Speaking about the dilemma, the dog owner took to Reddit and said: “A few months ago I offered to my best friend to host her baby shower. We’ve known each other for 20 years. I was her maid of honour. She accepted, invitations were sent out a few weeks ago – we are in the thick of planning it as it is next weekend.
“The topic of my dogs came up. She doesn’t want them at the party. I was like this is the dogs house too, I’m not going to take them anywhere or lock them away. She said there are going to be a lot of people here including several young children. We’ve know each other forever, she knows my dogs are well behaved and great with kids. Even if they were messed with, I trust that nothing would happen.”
The pregnant woman explained to her friend that while she is “fine” with the dogs, they can be “a bit much” and she does not think they should be present in a party setting. “She again asked at the very least if I could keep them locked away,” added the host.
But that didn’t go down well. The host added: “I told her that she can find a new venue to host her baby shower. She called me an a*****e. She didn’t think this was a big deal. I asked her to leave.
“She has let everyone know that there is a venue change and now I’ve had people reaching out to me about what happened. Am I being the a*****e?”
The Reddit post raked in over 4,000 comments, with a number of dog owners weighing in. One individual said: “I have three [dogs] the same size and I’d never imagine hosting a party with little kids and food and having them run around. They’re better off in their beds for a few hours, away from the craziness that is a baby shower.
“Not everyone loves dogs. Especially big dogs. You no dubitably believe they’re the best dogs that have ever dogged, but even good dogs are still animals. I don’t understand how that was out of bounds of compromise?
“But I don’t understand how this wasn’t brought up at the beginning. Seems like it should have been discussed far prior to invites being sent out which is where her blame lies.”
“I have to say we have two dogs and I wouldn’t think of letting them roam around while I hosted an event,” added another. One dog owner offered a suggestion and said: “We had two labs, great dogs! But, when we had gatherings- especially those with people that weren’t typically over, we put them in the side yard with access to the garage. They were comfy and had room to roam, guests were comfortable. Too many things can go wrong.”
One other commented: “I have two large dogs. For me it depends on who is at my house—friends and family, the dogs stay out. If I were hosting a party like a shower where I probably wouldn’t know everyone, the dogs would be out away.”
But another said: “I’ve been at a party with two big dogs and I love dogs, I will go out of my way to pet a dog providing it and the owner are happy with that.”
“Everyone that I know who has dogs lets them roam around during get togethers,” added another.
