A woman was left horrified when a man turned up at her home under the guise of buying something off her that she’d listed on Facebook Marketplace, only to find he wanted more
A woman has urgently warned people to be careful when selling things on Facebook Marketplace, after one man turned up and took things too far.
Tania was just trying to make some extra cash when she put her old TV up for sale on the reselling platform, but she got far more than she bargained for when the man rocked up and seemed less than interested in the electrical goods, but began to make sexual advances towards her and her flatmates.
She was left fearing for her safety, and even ended up moving house after the horrendous ordeal, as she thought she’d seen his car outside a few times.
She told 7Life: “I was so terrified after this experience that I deleted everything from Facebook Marketplace and gave the TV to a friend who really needed it.”
She said it “scared” her, and that’s why she moved house. The ordeal began at the start of March, when Tania listed the item for sale. She said the man seemed really keen to buy the TV at first, and that’s why she believed he was totally legit.
When he arrived, rather than collecting the TV and leaving, he allegedly asked the women whether they smoked and whether they wanted to hang out inside for a bit, leaving them suspicious of his motives.
Tania said she felt “weird” about the situation, so she bluntly told him that she was there to sell the TV and didn’t want to discuss anything else. But rather than leave, he started asking inappropriate questions, asking them whether they were up for “trying new things”.
Rather than engaging in the conversation, the quick-thinking women said that their “partners” were coming round in five minutes to get the man to leave. His response was: “Alright, are you girls sure you don’t want to fool around tonight?” Creepy.
Tania wanted to warn others about giving their address out on Facebook Marketplace, saying that she hopes nobody else has to go through a similar situation.
“Please don’t ever give anyone your address. It’s best to meet in public places if people choose to buy or sell from there”, she said.
Meta, who owns Facebook, has been contacted by The Mirror for comment.
