A woman left people in awe after she showcased her pet raven’s “surprising” and very impressive trick. Ravens are incredibly intelligent, all-black birds belonging to the crow family. They’re large, powerful creatures and are known for being highly adaptable.

Ravens live in a variety of habitats and typically pair for life, choosing to nest in high locations such as trees, cliffs and mountains. Their numbers dwindled in past years due to persecution though they do seem to be recovering. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) states: “Ravens were once heavily persecuted as pests on farmland and game estates, but protection has helped their numbers recover.”

They’re wild animals and not a common or ideal option for a pet, as they have very complex needs. Ravens require decent social interaction, vast open spaces and constant mental stimulation which isn’t easy to offer in a domesticated setting.

A woman named Amy documents her experiences with her raven, Fable. Originally born in England, Amy now lives “in the Angus Glens of Scotland with [her] husband James and [their] son Alfie.”

On her website, which focuses on birds, Amy said: “I have been a falconer for 17 years, and more recently have spent time documenting some of my work with birds of prey, as well as my raven called Fable.

“I spent many years engaging with the general public by running falconry experience days and flying my birds at public demonstrations.”

In a recent video on TikTok, Amy shared raven Fable’s impressive “speaking” tricks, surprising many people on the hit social media platforms. Ravens can’t technically speak but they’re excellent mimics, able to perfectly copy a variety of sounds and words which creates the illusion of talking.

Speaking directly to the camera, Amy explained: “Since my last video, it’s come to my attention that a lot of you didn’t realise that ravens can speak, so I thought today would be a great time to show you a few clips of some of the things that Fable has said over the last seven years that she’s been with me.”

She then added a compilation of clips showcasing Fable’s skills. The clips illustrate “only a few of the things she can say” because some of the phrases and words Fable has said were “never caught on camera”.

Amy added: “She used to do a lot more sounds, she’s become kind of lazier as I’ve had her for longer. She has favourite words and favourite sounds she likes to make.”

In the comments section, people were keen to share their thoughts.

One person said: “Yeah, it makes you wonder how many scary voices in the Appalachian forests are just chatty ravens who have hung out around some people.”

Another said: “The first person to have a wild bird fly up to them and do the head tilt and stare and then proceed to say words in their voice was probably not okay for a very long time.”

A third commented: “It’s YOUR VOICE tho. That’s the real trippy part”.

Another was less impressed and said: “That is horrifying. Respectfully. But I would pass away.”

Echoing this sentiment, a fifth said: “If my pet responded to me IN MY VOICE I would simply perish.”

Another added: “Late 50s, mom had a neighbour that had one as a pet. One morning the bird kept repeating ‘Bobby’s late’. Neighbour had not gotten up for school. Turns out there was a carbon monoxide leak and the whole family were passed out. Bird saved their lives”.
