The pedestrian he hit later died in A&E
A man has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after hittig a pedestrian as he sped over twice the limit. Justin Clarke-Samuel, 41, of Woodford Green, drove into Yubin Tamang, 20, on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, at 11.33pm on Saturday, October 18.
He was driving his BMW at over 60mph in a 30mph zone. His car was left battered with a smashed windscreen, bonnet marks, and damage to the front bumper as well as a missing wing mirror cover.
On the night of the crash, police checked the number plate, which showed the car as being registered and insured to Clarke-Samuel. He was arrested the same day at his house on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. But the charge was bumped up two days later, after Yubin died in A&E from his injuries.
Prosecutors added two further counts of dangerous driving at a hearing at the Old Bailey on Monday, November 24. On Thursday, December 4, Clarke-Samuel was further charged with causing death by careless driving while over the alcohol limit.
He pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court earlier today (Monday, December 8) to one count of dangerous driving in Camden, Islington and Hackney on the day of the collision, before the crash. He will be sentenced on February 12.
Detective Inspector Mark Braithwaite said: “Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Yubin’s family. While nothing can undo their loss, today’s two guilty pleas mark a step toward justice. We hope this brings them some measure of comfort.
“Split-second decisions behind the wheel can have devastating, life-changing consequences. Too often, we find ourselves supporting families who have lost loved ones because drivers chose to ignore speed limits and drink laws.
“In this case, the outstanding work and diligence of our investigation team, led by Detective Sergeant Faye Cook, ensured that Clarke-Samuel had no choice but to plead guilty to two charges today.”
