Dubbed ‘The Golden Boy’ this burger isn’t your standard fast-food meal. It’s dripping in gold leaf, slathered with caviar and even uses buns made with champagne. But its price tag may just leave you speechless

You won’t believe the price tag on this burger.

The Guinness World Records has just unveiled the globe’s most expensive hamburger – and it’s left people utterly baffled. Dubbed ‘The Golden Boy’, this ambitious bun is no typical meat-cheese-gherkin combination.

As the name suggests, it’s actually dripping in gold leaf, while the burger itself is crafted from top-notch juicy wagyu beef, slathered in caviar and king crab. Even its bun and onion rings are formed from Dom Pérignon – a vintage champagne that’s only released at the most exceptional quality.

But it’s eye-watering cost isn’t for the faint-hearted, with a single portion selling for €5,000 (£4,295 / $5,967). “Its taste is described as sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami, which means it has a pleasant savoury flavour,” the Guinness World Records explained just last week.

“…The hefty price tag is all down to the top quality ingredients.” Unsurprisingly, this has stirred up quite the controversy online, with various people claiming they’d never be able to spend that much on a single meal.

On TikTok, one person wrote: “If it’s that expensive, it better pay me 100 dollars each bite I take,” as others on Instagram chimed in: “I can also make burger and sell it at 6k dollar,” and: “An insult to world hunger.”

However, Robbert Jan De Veen – the mastermind behind this creation – insists he did it for a good cause. The Dutch chef, who works at The Daltons restaurant in Gelderland, initially came up with this idea during the Covid-19 lockdown.

While he always dreamed of holding a world record, he wanted to draw attention to poverty in the Netherlands. So, the earnings from his first Golden Boy were used to make 1,000 food packages for families in need.

He told his record awarders: “I mean, it’s easy to just take a few really expensive ingredients and put them on a burger. But for me, it was very important that the burger also tastes awesome… I wanted to see how far can we go with it, how much can we put in to it.”
