Microsoft could announce a swathe of new laptops this week that could finally make them as powerful as a MacBook.
One of the biggest changes in years could be coming to Microsoft’s range of popular laptops and it might help to make these machines as powerful as the latest MacBooks. Apple switched away from Intel processors all the way back in 2020 with the US technology firm moving over to its own M-branded silicon. Since that decision was made, the MacBook has become supremely powerful and way more efficient allowing users to keep the screen glowing for up to 18 hours without needing to go near a plug.
Now it seems Microsoft could also be moving away from Intel and placing the new Snapdragon X Elite processor from Qualcomm inside instead.
This hugely impressive chip, which was announced at the end of last year, could being some serious performance gains to new Surface devices launched by Microsoft.
In fact, Qualcomm confirmed during the X Elite launch in Hawaii that it delivers up to two times faster CPU performance than its rivals.
Thanks to the very latest 4nm System-on-a-Chip architecture and a 12-core Qualcomm OryonTM CPU, laptops that feature this all-new brain will be able to perform the usual daily digital tasks at a much faster pace. All of that oomph should be backed up by better efficiency so there shouldn’t be any concerns about running low on battery life.
The Snapdragon X Elite has also been created with AI in mind with Qualcomm stating that it’s worked hard to make sure its processor can “support the intelligent and power-intensive tasks of the future.”
Finally, there is compatibility with 5G and Wi-Fi 7 technology for fast access to the web.
“Snapdragon X Elite represents a dramatic leap in innovation for computing as we deliver our new, custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU for super-charged performance that will delight consumers with incredible power efficiency and take their creativity and productivity to the next level,” said Kedar Kondap, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Compute & Gaming, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
“Powerful on-device AI experiences will enable seamless multitasking and new intuitive user experiences, empowering consumers and businesses alike to create and accomplish more.”
There’s no word on what new laptops will be announced by Microsoft this week but the technology giant is holding a major launch event in Seattle so hopefully, we’ll know more soon.
