The humble broccoli is packed full of good stuff, but it turns out we’ve been eating them wrong this entire time – here’s the easiest way to cook the mini trees – and why you should never throw away the stem
Eating your greens has never been easier with this ‘genius’ broccoli hack.
It might not be the best part of a Sunday roast, but broccoli is a cheap vegetable packed with nutrition. In fact, just a 100g portion provides 148% of your Vitamin C needs and 10% of your Vitamin B6. They’re also high in fibre and low in fat – making them a great side dish if you’re wanting to shed a couple of pounds.
However, if you’re chopping off the stem before boiling your broccoli, you’re doing it all wrong. My Real Food on TikTok, an account that has amassed more than 38,000 followers thanks to its ‘healthy recipes’ and food hacks, has urged its followers to keep the stalk intact when boiling broccoli.
“All you need to do is submerge the head of the broccoli into boiling water and then you can cut [the florets] super easy and super quick,” the video explains.
The foodie then chopped the boiled stem up into little slices and fried them with oil and soy sauce – describing the side dish as ‘delicious’. Whilst you may be used to just binning your stems, they actually contain more calcium, iron, and Vitamin C than the florets – and means you’re making the most of your money.
Viewers flocked to the comments section to hail the advice, with one person raving:”[I] love this idea!” Another agreed, commenting: “Finally, someone who uses the stem which is the most valuable part.” While a third branded the tip ‘genius’.
It’s clear many didn’t know the stem was edible. Others revealed you can actually eat it raw too. “It’s delicious. I even eat it raw. It’s crunchy and slightly sweet,” one person wrote. Another said: “You can eat it raw too, it tastes like a radish.”
