If you’ve abandoned your skirting board duty, there’s no need to tackle them with harsh cleaning products like bleach. In fact, one expert says a simple solution will do the job just fine

Cleaning your skirting boards is a chore most of us neglect, but dirt and dust can quickly build up.

If you’ve abandoned your skirting boards for a while, you may be tempted to tackle them with super-strong cleaning products like bleach. It’s understandable, as food stains and pet hair can leave them looking rather grim over time. But, one homeware expert says the key to achieving ‘sparkling’ skirting boards is by keeping things simple.

So, put down the plethora of harsh chemicals you’ve got stashed away and get your Fairy Liquid at the ready. This hack will yield incredible results without spending a fortune on fancy products that can be hazardous to little ones and our furry friends.

Joe Phillips owner of Skirting King preaches the mantra of ‘simple does it’ and says skirting boards can look like new again with just two simple ingredients. “Warm water mixed with a small amount of dish soap can clean your skirting boards without the need for harsh chemicals,” he said.

The expert recommends combining warm water with just a ‘dash’ of dish soap in a bowl or bucket. Then, dust the skirting boards using a dry microfibre cloth to make sure any loose dust or dirt has been removed.

Soak another clean microfibre cloth into the cleaning solution, wring out any excess water and gently wipe the skirting boards. Et voila! It really is that simple. You can pick up Fairy Washing Up Liquid from a slew of online retailers and supermarkets. Poundland is currently selling a 320 ml bottle for – you guessed it – £1. You can also grab a five-pack from Amazon for £11.79 if you want to stock up.

If you’ve noticed your skirting boards have picked up some unsightly stains that haven’t lifted after cleaning – a household staple can be used without scratching the paint or finish. “A paste made from baking soda and water can gently but effectively remove those tough marks without causing any harm to your skirting boards,” added.

Simply mix baking soda with water and apply the paste to the problem areas, lightly scrubbing them off with a ‘soft-bristled brush or cloth’. Then, wipe the boards with a cloth dampened in water to get rid of any leftover residue. Dry with a clean, dry cloth to prevent any moisture damage.
