People have been pronouncing US Vice President Kamala Harris’ name incorrectly, and a video has been unearthed from 2016 showing people how to correctly say the moniker
Members of the public are only just realising they have been pronouncing Kamala Harris’ name wrong.
The Vice President has been in the spotlight even more since Joe Biden announced he would no longer be running for President in the 2024 election. Despite her fame, however, people still don’t know how to say her name.
Now a video posted in 2016 video has done the rounds on Twitter/X once again yet people “still get it wrong” even with the use of the handy guide.
Writing on May 24 of that year, Harris herself wrote wrote: “People pronounce my name many different ways. Let #KidsForKamala show you how it’s done.” Attached was a video of children attempting to pronounce her name before the correct pronunciation was given.
Cameluh, Kuhmahluh and Karmeluh were all seen crossed out in the video before Kamala’s name appeared, with the correct pronunciation delivered. Yet the name is still a struggle for some people.
BBC presenter Raijini Vaidyanathan wrote: “For the avoidance of any doubt – Kamala Harris released this guide on how she’d like you to pronounce her first name. (This was released years ago, but so many people still get it wrong).” Many people were thankful for the video, saying it was a valuable way to showcase how to pronounce the Vice President’s name.
One user wrote: “interesting indeed. But it will take time for the world to get it right.” Another wrote: “She has been a VP for the past years, repeatedly in the news. Anyone still can’t pronounce her name correctly? Lol”
A third added: “We’ve become used to self-pronunciation videos for footballers’ names and they’re a godsend for us commentators, so this is super helpful. Thanks!”
