A man has been charged with murder following the death of an elderly woman in Bethnal Green. Mizanur Rahman, 45, is accused of killing Sufia Khatun on Russia Lane, near Cambridge Heath station, on Thursday, August 14.

The 73-year-old was found with a serious head injury at 9pm and pronounced dead at the scene. Her family are now being supported by specialist officers at the Metropolitan Police.

The force confirmed a post-mortem will take place in due course. Mr Rahmun is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 16 August in connection.

He is believed to be known to Ms Khatun. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads the central east command unit, said: “Our team of officers and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this woman’s tragic death.

“This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the general public. However, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.”

“If you have any information, if you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area in the hours leading up to 9pm last night, please contact us to help with our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police by calling 101, quoting 7726/14AUG. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111 or the charity’s website.
