A Sunday market in Clapton is set to pedestrianised in a bid to make the area ‘safer’ and ‘more spacious’, Hackney Council has confirmed. The area around the historic Chatsworth Road Market will now be almost entirely car-free from 6am to 8pm as of this weekend’s event (Sunday, August 24).
Drivers will be unable to use the stretch between Dunlace Road and Blurton Road, though access will remain for emergency vehicles, market traders and bin lorries. The transformation is part of Hackney Council’s Liveable Neighbourhood programme, and has been funded by Transport for London (TfL).
Approved plans also include the implementation of a bus gate, turn restrictions and one-way systems, as well as the addition of flood-reducing rain gardens. It’s hoped the changes will encourage residents to walk and cycle more, shop locally and enjoy public spaces.
Work on each project is already underway and is due to be completed by mid-September. Hackney councillor Sarah Young, cabinet member for climate change, environment and transport, said: “We’ve worked closely with local people to design plans that will make the area safer, greener and more welcoming — creating streets that work better for everyone.
“We know some residents have concerns about the impact on traffic and driving times, but based on similar schemes and our modelling for the area, we expect overall traffic levels to fall over time, including on boundary roads, making essential car journeys easier and more reliable. “
She also confirmed the East London authority will be monitoring the scheme’s impact over the three years.
The new-look Chatsworth Road Market is kicking off with a launch party at 10am this Sunday (August 24). Attendees can enjoy live music, drumming workshops and play areas, alongside the regular array of market stalls and al fresco dining options.
Traders used the stretch between Homerton and Lower Clapton for over 100 years before it was closed down in the 1990s. Having been revived in 2010, the market is now home to over 40 stalls selling butcher meat, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, vintage treasures, handmade beauty products, clothing and jewellery.
Chatsworth Road Market runs every Sunday, 10am-5pm.
