After a gloriously sunny bank holiday weekend Londoners can expect a dreary end to August. Rain will blight the capital for the foreseeable, with thunderstorms even forecast for next week.
Festival and carnival celebrators were treated to a weekend of clear skies and temperatures in the mid-twenties. But it looks like this could be the last of the summer sun as we go into nearly two weeks of on-and-off showers.
Light showers are forecast to creep in today (Wednesday, August 27) until the following Wednesday (September 3), with temperatures staying in the low-twenties range. There will be some some brief respite from the rain on Sunday and Tuesday – although it is still predicted to remain cooler than it has been.
Thunderstorms are predicted to hit London on Thursday (September 4), with showers and a gentle breeze also expected. Londoners will be sad to here that there is then no sign of temperatures rising above 19C for the foreseeable.
While the storms will clear, there will be on-and-off rain until the following Tuesday (September 9). With a very bleak start to September, it remains to be seen if there will be any chance of a late summer in London.
Despite the dip in temperatures, summer 2025 has been dubbed “almost certainly” the hottest on record in the UK. The mean temperature across the country currently stands at 16.31C – well ahead of the previous warmest Summer in 2018 (15.76C).
Temperatures during the rest of August would need to be four degrees below normal to prevent the record being broken, say the Met Office. The trend is in line with evidence that summers are getting hotter and drier because of climate change.
