The President of the United States claimed immigration and clean energy plans ‘will be the death of Western Europe’
Donald Trump has claimed London wants to “go to sharia law”.
In an address to the United Nations General Assembly, the US president claimed the UN was “funding an assault on Western countries and their borders”.
He said: “Europe is in serious trouble. They have been invaded by a force of illegal aliens like nobody’s ever seen before.”
Mr Trump went on: “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed.
“Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that.
“Both the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something isn’t done immediately. This cannot be sustained.”
Labour’s Wes Streeting has replied since. The Health Secretary said in a post on X: “@SadiqKhan is not trying to impose sharia law on London.
“This is a mayor who marches with Pride, who stands up for difference of background and opinion, who’s focused on improving our transport, our air, our streets, our safety, our choices and chances.
“Proud he’s our mayor.”
Mr Trump is no stranger to beef with the Mayor of London. After his recent state visit, during which he stayed with King Charles at Windsor Castle and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Chequers, described Sir Sadiq as “among the worst mayors in the world.”
Sir Sadiq said he “indifferent” towards the US President and has “more important things to worry about.”
Asked to respond to Mr Trump’s claim, Sir Sadiq said on Sunday (September 21): “I’ve not really given it much thought. I am indifferent to President Trump. I literally (have) more important things to worry about.”
“I think the Mayor of London, Khan, is among the worst mayors in the world,” Mr Trump said, “and we have some bad ones. If you look at Chicago, but I think he’s the equivalent of the mayor of Chicago. I think he’s done a terrible job. Crime in London is through the roof. The Mayor of London, Khan, Mayor Khan has done a terrible job.”
