Part of the airport was evacuated with passengers not allowed through security

London Stansted was part-evacuated in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, September 24) during a fire. Holidaymakers were left with uncertainty after a fire broke out in the Escape Lounge – right by the main departures section – at about 3.30am.

The immediate area was evacuated with the chaos leading to flight delays. However Stansted clarified it was ‘quickly extinguished by the Airport Fire Service’, but it has had knock-on effects with National Rail confirming there will be disruption to-and-from the airport until 9.30pm.

At 7.55am the airport said: “Following the fire earlier this morning in our Escape Lounge, it is taking longer than usual for passengers to pass through the airport. There is also unrelated disruption to the Stansted Express and Cross County rail services to the airport.

“Passengers are therefore advised to check the status of their flights and allow extra time for their journeys if necessary.”

Taking to X, Greater Anglia said: “Greater Anglia and Stansted Express customers may use their ticket, at no extra on Central Connect buses route 305 route between Bishops Stortford and Stansted Airport.”

How big was the fire?

It was only a small fire, according to the airport, which broke out at around 3am. It didn’t lead to the entire airport being evacuated, only the immediate area.

What was the cause?

The cause of the fire hasn’t yet been specified, but it was quickly extinguished. There were no reports of any injuries.

Was there any damage?

It is not clear whether there was any damage, but London Stansted hasn’t suggested there was.

Are flights delayed?

Some flights are now facing delay, according to the airport’s departures page. The 10.10am Jet2 flight to Lanzarote is delayed by an hour, while boarding information hasn’t yet been shared for earlier flights.
