London weather is likely to be a mis of showers and cloud over the weekend

Forecasters have confirmed that London will not be hit by Hurricane Gabrielle this weekend – despite unsettled weather on the way. The Met Office said that the rain and wind set to sweep across much of the UK will not be a result of the Atlantic storm, which is currently tracking towards the Azores. By the weekend, Gabrielle will have downgraded from hurricane status and is expected to move east into the Bay of Biscay, staying well to the south of the UK.

Tom Crabtree, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Wet, and at times, windy weather can be expected for many over the weekend, but this will not be a direct influence of what will be by then, ex-Hurricane Gabrielle. While some uncertainty remains over its exact track, we are confident that the remnants of Gabrielle will stay well to the south of the UK.”

That means Londoners can expect showers and cloud over the weekend, but nothing out of the ordinary for late. Temperatures will remain around the seasonal average of 17C to 18C in the coming days. September.

Last week, London basked in late-summer warmth with temperatures soaring into the high-20s – well above the seasonal average of around 18°C. Since then, cooler air has swept in, bringing chilly starts and even frost in parts. Operational meteorologist Kathryn Chalk added that the change marks “a change of tide” after a spell of fine and dry conditions last week.
