With the Christmas and New Year period just around the corner, many of us may get swept up in present shopping and forget to plan ahead when it comes to food and drinks. It’s often a gut-wrenching moment when you get home and realise you’ve forgotten something major.
It’s essential to know when the shops are open on the major festive days, especially as many of them are bank holidays. You do not want to be left with empty cupboards at the 11th hour.
MyLondon has collected the opening times for all Lidl, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. You can find out more below.
Lidl
Every Lidl store in Great Britain will be closed on Christmas Day. Most stores outside the M25 and in Wales will also be shut on Boxing Day, and all stores outside the M25 will be closed on New Year’s Day.
However shoppers are encouraged to check their local store’s opening hours online or through the Lidl Plus app.
Sainsbury’s
The vast majority of supermarkets and convenience stores will be open from 6am to 11pm from between December 18t to December 23. Supermarkets will be open from 6am to 7pm on Christmas Eve and convenience stores from 6am to 9pm.
But all stores will be closed on Christmas Day. On Boxing Day, supermarkets will be open from 9am to 6pm and convenience stores from 9am to 9pm.
On New Year’s Eve, supermarkets will be open from 10am to 7pm and convenience stores from 6am to 9pm. While on n New Year’s Day, supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm and convenience stores from 9am to 9pm.
Sainsbury’s said petrol filling stations will open 30 minutes before and close 30 minutes after the main store, except on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when they will open an hour later.
Aldi
All Aldi stores will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and will reopen as usual on December 27. Stores will also be closed on New Year’s Day and reopen on Friday, January 2.
Opening hours will vary in the days leading up to Christmas, with Aldi operating extended hours to ensure customers can stock up ahead of the big day.
Tesco
On Christmas Eve Tesco Extra stores and Superstores will close at 7pm. Express stores will all be closed by 10pm, and some may close at 7pm.
All Tesco stores and petrol stations will be closed on Christmas Day. While on Boxing Day Tesco Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 9am to 6pm.
The majority of Express stores will be open from 9am to 7pm, and some larger Express stores will close at 6pm. Between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve all stores will follow their normal opening hours.
On New Year’s Eve Tesco Extra stores and Superstores will close at 7pm, and the majority of Express stores will close at 10pm, and some larger Express stores will close at 7pm. And on New Year’s Day stores and Superstores will be open from 9am and close by 6pm.
The majority of Express stores will open from 8am-10pm, but some larger Express stores may have shorter opening hours.
