Todd Boehly told not to make ‘crazy’ transfer decision as Chelsea described as a ‘shambles’

Chelsea are one of a number of Premier League clubs who will reportedly have to sell players to comply with Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules. Although that pressure is not on this summer’s transfer window.

The Blues have spent more than £1billion on signings since Todd Boehly took over the club in 2022, with a number of those on long-term contracts, in order to amortise the payments. The loophole in complying with financial regulations was closed by the Premier League after Chelsea did this, and the Blues are likely to have to bring in sums for current players in the next couple of transfer windows.

One of those linked with an exit this summer is Conor Gallagher, who is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa. The England international is out of contract next summer, so there are only two more opportunities for the Blues to sell him for money before he leaves for free. Unless they get him to sign a new contract, talks for which have not been held, football.london understands.

Chelsea will look to get around £50million for the midfielder, although with only one year left on his current deal, clubs like Spurs and Villa may look to get him cheaper.

He is not the only one to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Trevoh Chalobah and even Reece James linked with transfer exits. All three would represent ‘pure profit’ for Chelsea, having come through the academy.

Former Blues player Wayne Bridge cannot believe what is happening in west London. Speaking to football.london as Betfred’s Euro 2024 ambassador, Bridge said: “That stuff just blows my mind, but the fact you might have to sell them, you’ve created that yourself.

“To sell one of your best players, and talk of Reece James too is absolutely crazy. The fact you’ve let it get to that is crazy.

“It’s just a shambles. So many cogs in the football club have to click, the owner, the manager, the players, so the relationships are really hard. It’s just really hard, that’s why it’s a shambles, it’s all over the place, they’ve spent so much money.

“When you hear about Gallagher going and Reece James going, it’s mind blowing to be honest.”

Chelsea ended the 2023/24 Premier League season on a high, but it is never quiet at Stamford Bridge and the summer looks set to be one full of news, with question marks over Mauricio Pochettino’s future at the club and plenty of talk around transfers.
