Mitcham 90-minute crime spree leaves man stabbed fighting for his life and 2 others attacked

A 90-minute crime spree has left a 51-year-old man fighting for his life in hospital and two others with injuries. Police are investigating three incidents in Mitcham which happened between 11.20pm on Monday, June 24 and 12.50am on Tuesday, June 25 all believed to have involved the same suspect.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested by police on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH). The first attack shortly before 11.20pm on Monday involved a 24-year-old man suffering face injuries after he was assaulted by the suspect in Priory Retail Park.

Half an hour later a 61-year-old man was attacked in Belgrave Road, suffering head injuries. Neither victim suffered life threatening injuries.

At 12.50am on Tuesday the violence concluded after a 51-year-old man was stabbed in Saxonbury Close. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance crews where he remains fighting for his life.

The 24-year-old man who is suspected to be behind all three incidents was also taken to hospital as a precaution before being taken to a West London police station.

Scotland Yard is now appealing for anyone who witnessed the attacks. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm that detectives are investigating a series of assaults that took place in Mitcham.

“At 11.19pm on Monday, June 24, police received a report of the male suspect having approached a 24-year-old man at Priory Retail Park and assaulted him causing facial injuries. His injuries were not life threatening. A short time later at 11.48pm, London Ambulance Service [LAS] called police to a 61-year-old man with a head injury following an assault at Belgrave Road, Mitcham.

“The man was taken to hospital by LAS where his condition was not life threatening. At 12.51am on Tuesday, June 25 police were called to reports of a stabbing at Saxonbury Close, Mitcham. Officers attended. At the scene a 51-year-old man was found with knife injuries. He was taken by LAS to hospital where his condition is critical.

“Detectives investigating believe that all three incidents involved the same suspect. A 24-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, 25 June on suspicion of grievous bodily harm [GBH]. He was taken to hospital as a precaution before being taken to a west London police station where he remains at this time.

“Anyone who witnessed any of these incidents or has footage, but has not yet spoken with police should call 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting 291/25JUN.”
