The Key Stage 2 (KS2) Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) exams results are set to be shared today. SATs measure school performance and whether or not children are at the level they should be.

Reading, writing, maths and science SATs average results from 2023

In 2023, in reading, 73 per cent of pupils met the expected standard, down from 75 per cent in 2022. It was a similar story in maths too, where 73 per cent of pupils hit the expected standard, up from 71 per cent the year before.

And in the writing teacher assessment, 71 per cent of students met the expected standard, this was up from 69 per cent in 2022. Grammar, punctuation and spelling also saw a rise after 72 per cent of pupils met the expected standard, unchanged from 2022.

In the science teacher assessment, 80 per cent of kids got the expected standard, up from 79 per cent in 2022.

The numbers also show that in all of reading, writing and maths combined, 60 per cent of students met the expected standard, up from 59 per cent in the year before.

Girls made more progress than boys in reading and writing, while boys made more progress in maths. When it comes to finding out this year’s results, each school will decide how to release SATs scores. For Key Stage 2 (Year 6), schools often send a list of results home with each child’s end-of-term school report.

The child will then get confirmation of whether they reached the national standard – ‘AS’.
