What are Conservative Mayor of London candidate Susan Hall’s policies?

London Assembly Member and Harrow councillor, Susan Hall, is the Tory pick to take on Sadiq Khan on May 2. The former hairdresser and salon owner was selected by Conservative Party members in July last year.

She will attempt to topple the Labour incumbent, a nationally recognised politician who has served two terms as the capital’s leader and has therefore been in the limelight for longer. Last week, we spoke to a number of voters in Croydon – by no means an extensive survey – but none knew who Ms Hall was.

One person even called her a ‘ghost’. But, in an exclusive interview with MyLondon in October, the veteran London politician insisted was confident of victory. “I will win this”, Ms Hall said.

In an effort to woo voters to her way of thinking, she has made promises to electors. Here is a breakdown of what Ms Hall has pledged so far.

Policing and crime

Ms Hall says she would spend £7 million on providing London schools with knife detection arches. The Tory candidate added that £375,000 would also be provided to ensure that all frontline police would have access to knife-detection wands.

During her chat with MyLondon, Ms Hall also pledged to inject £200 million into the Metropolitan Police Service to ‘stop these gangs of youths running through our streets with machetes’. She said: “We’ve got to have more police officers on the street, we’ve got to have better results for people when a crime is committed”

To fund her commitment, Ms Hall says will cut ‘waste’. This includes TfL nominee passes, ‘where friends and family of TfL staff are given free travel at a cost of up to £160 million a year in lost revenue’ and ‘excess City Hall staffing costs’.

Earlier this week, another promise was made that, if she were elected, no police stations in the city would close on her watch.

Transport

Ms Hall – the daughter of a ‘hard working’ panel beater, engineer and garage owner – has said that she would like to see more use of the River Thames for public boat services. Earlier this week, she also pledged that she would reintroduce the permitted use of 60+ Oyster card and freedom pass during peak hours.

Currently, they cannot be used between 4.30am and 9am between Monday and Thursday. But Sadiq Khan has made them usable at peak times on Fridays as part of his all day off-peak fare trial.

Regarding the capital’s ULEZ, Ms Hall has promised to scrap the scheme’s expansion into Outer London ‘on day one’. She says drivers of non-compliant vehicles – TfL says 95 per cent of vehicles seen driving in London on an average day now meet emission standards – ‘can’t afford’ to pay the £12.50 fee.

Housing

Regarding more homes for Londoners, Ms Hall has said she would like to focus on small houses with gardens. This would involve steering clear of high-rise towers.

She has described the policy to MyLondon as ‘low rise high density’ housing for families. Each property would have ‘postage stamp’ gardens.

Of course, she has suggested that she would build more than Mr Khan, claiming that he has only started 4 per cent of the homes he promised. The current Mayor of London says he would build 40,000 more council homes before 2030, and his party claims he has overseen a ‘golden age’ of house construction.
