Arsenal are aiming to finish the season on a high note and secure their spot in next season’s Champions League with just two matches remaining.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that it has been a tough season for his team, given their recent high standards. While a top-five finish in the Premier League is almost guaranteed, Arteta’s squad will finish well short of champions Liverpool and they have yet to wrap up second place.
However, there is optimism at Emirates Stadium that the summer transfer window could bring in the right players to end Arsenal’s top-flight title drought. Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres is one of the names being heavily linked due to his standout performances for the Portuguese club in recent seasons.
Below are some of the latest headlines surrounding the Gunners as well as a view on each one…
Striker dilemma
Arsenal’s hunt for a new striker is said to be between Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko this summer.
According to The Independent, Sesko is likely to prove the more expensive option, with his price potentially rising to around £75million after he signed a new contract last summer. However, Sesko is viewed as meeting Arsenal’s requirements in terms of link-up play and physicality.
Isaac Seelochan of football.london says:“It feels like Gyokeres would be the better option stats-wise but Sesko may be more suited to Arteta’s team. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak would be the ideal summer signing for Arsenal in my view, but reports of a £100m+ price tag are likely to be a major stumbling block.”
Gordon ‘move’
Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a shock move for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.
“Arsenal are looking to strengthen out wide,” former Manchester United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider.
“We’ve spoken about Martinelli, and if he leaves, they want to bring somebody in who is better than him, and there are a few names on their radar. One player they’ve shown interest in is Anthony Gordon.
“They’ve been looking at him, keeping an eye on his situation in case he becomes available. Newcastle have a bit of uncertainty about them because of their financial situation.
“If they can offer a lot of money for him, Newcastle might have to accept. Then, Arsenal have to decide whether the money it would take to bring him in is worth what he will bring to the team and whether he’s the right fit.
“But he’s still young and there’s a reason they’ve been looking at him for a while.”
Isaac Seelochan of football.london says:“Gordon would be a superb signing for Arsenal in a position that needs strengthening. Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams would be another excellent option for that left-wing position, which needs some stardust for the Gunners.”
