Victor Osimhen has once again shown why he is the perfect striker signing for Chelsea to complete in this summer’s transfer window. The Blues desperately need another addition up top with Nicolas Jackson having struggled significantly at points this season.
The 23-year-old has technically just completed his second campaign at Stamford Bridge, with his dismissal against Newcastle United meaning he will be suspended for the final two league games. In his two years at the club, he has scored 24 league goals with 10 assists also to his name.
Having made 65 Premier League appearances, that works out at least one goal contribution every game which is a pretty impressive achievement given his lack of senior minutes prior to joining Chelsea.
The problem is just under one third of those came in a four-month spell in this campaign. While that was great for Chelsea at the time, the stat existing means there were several games he was unable to significantly impact.
A hamstring injury and a lack of form saw him go 17 league matches without a goal this season. In his absence, Enzo Maresca adapted the system but just having another top-level striker available would have been the ideal solution.
That is why Chelsea feel the need to bring in another striker but they will be entering a very competitive market. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked to some high-profile names with Alexander Isak, Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres among the options being considered by at least two clubs.
Osimhen meanwhile, is barely mentioned in multi-club transfer battles which means Chelsea could have a free run at signing him. In the late stages of last summer’s window, attempts were made to strike a loan for the Nigeria international but Napoli never agreed to those terms.
Instead he joined Galatasaray on a temporary basis in order to continue playing football on the European stage. Regardless of the level of the Turkish league, scoring 24 goals from 28 appearances is still a good return with the 26-year-old also bagging six goals in the Europa League and on Wednesday evening, his tally in the cup went up to five.
Largely due to an Osimhen brace, Galatasaray were able to Trabzonspor 3-0 in the Turkish cup final. On the big stage, Osimhen delivered yet again and that will certainly please Chelsea given their aims to win the big prizes. In the wake of the triumph, he sent a message on social media.
On X, alongside a photo of him with the trophy, he said: “Turkish Cup Winners! God is the Greatest [hands together, red and yellow heart, trophy emoji.]”
While no Premier League clubs appear interested, links to Juventus have increased as of late but Napoli will not want to sell to a direct rival. That means the advantage is certainly in Chelsea’s hands with Osimhen also seemingly open to joining.
