Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres’ transfer to Arsenal is reportedly all but assured – according to the Portuguese media on Monday morning.

The Swedish striker scored in the 2-0 victory over Vitoria to pip city rivals Benfica to the Liga Portugal crown. Sensationally, the strike was his 53rd of the season and 96th in total for Sporting in just 101 appearances for the club.

Considering his form, there is every chance that Gyokeres could finish the season by hitting triple figures for goals scored for the club when they take on Benfica in the Taca de Portugal final this weekend. In the build-up to the final, speculation is growing that Gyokeres will depart the club.

The 26-year-old has been on the radar for Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester United for several months as both teams look to add to their attacks. United were seen as being favourites at one stage due to Ruben Amorim’s close bond with the centre-forward.

However, the pendulum has since shifted in favour of the Gunners with sporting director Andrea Berta considered to be a big fan of the striker. Now, the splash on the Portuguese newspaper O Jogo insinuates that a move is done for Gyokeres.

Their front page runs with a headline which translates as: “Swede on his way to Arsenal.” It is claimed that a £58.9m deal has been struck between the two clubs and all that is left is the agreement of personal terms.

If this ends up being true, it would signify a brilliant start to the summer transfer window for Arsenal. The Gunners have been let down by their lack of centre-forward options this season and Gyokeres has been one of their key transfer targets for some time.

The nature of the transfer market is that nothing is done until the official announcement has been made. But, Arsenal supporters will undoubtedly be excited if the Swede moves back to England with them.
