Son Heung-min has been dreaming of lifting a trophy with Tottenham for years and that dream finally came true on Wednesday night.

The South Korean has given 10 years of his footballing career to Tottenham and has spent the last two seasons as the club captain. He more than, most, deserved a special night.

And, by winning the Europa League on Wednesday night, the 31-year-old went down in Spurs history, becoming only the third player in the last 34 years to lift a major trophy in the Lilywhite colours of Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking after the game, he said: “Let’s say I’m a legend. Why not?

“Seventeen years – nobody has done it, so let’s say with amazing players, [I am] probably a legend of the club.

“This is what I’ve always dreamed for. Today is the day it happened. I am the happiest man in the world.”

It is something the Spurs supporters have been dreaming of for years, but for Son, things did not quite go according to plan.

First of all, the Spurs skipper was not given a winner’s medal. UEFA ran out, by virtue of the number of Spurs players who went up to collect one, and the skipper was left without one, alongside Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur, as he went to collect the trophy.

Then, having collected the trophy, he walked over to his teammates, and after lifting it above his head, in the celebrations his teammates behind him pushed him forwards slightly and the Europa League trophy jolted back and hit him on the head.

Son did not make a fuss, enjoying the celebrations too much, but in the aftermath a bump emerged on his forehead. The skipper proceeded to show all his teammates who were interested his freak injury, with his best friend in the squad seeing it and saying “Oh my God”.

We’re sure the captain will be absolutely fine, although with that and a potential hangover from the after party, he might be feeling a little the worse for wear.

Spurs fans, the wait is over. After 17 years, Tottenham have their hands on silverware.
