Tottenham Hotspur are Europa League winners. Ange Postecoglou’s side got their hands on the famous trophy on Wednesday evening following a 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao.
Brennan Johnson’s goal proved to be the difference between the sides on the night at San Mames Stadium, thus bringing Spurs’ 17-year wait for a trophy to an end. Tottenham’s victory also means they will be back in the Champions League next season as a result of their Europa League success.
The scenes on the pitch were something really special as Postecoglou, his players and the coaching staff celebrated their incredible achievement. It wasn’t just the players in the matchday squad on the night who were at the centre of the celebrations, though.
All Tottenham first-team players had made the trip to Spain for the big occasion with the club having the opportunity to write their name into the history books. Injured midfielders James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski was present, long-term absentee Radu Dragusin was also there and the same went for unregistered players Antonin Kinsky, Fraser Forster, Sergio Reguilon, Timo Werner and Will Lankshear.
In the case of Werner, the German had played his part in the league phase of the competition during the first half of the season but he was then cut from the playing squad in February to accommodate winter signing Mathys Tel. Werner has barely featured for Tottenham in the second half of the season with injury limiting his opportunities under Postecoglou.
Making his mark in his initial loan deal with the club last season, this term things haven’t quite gone as planned for the ex-Chelsea man as he has played less football than he would have liked. Despite a frustrating end to the campaign for the player, he was certainly enjoying the celebrations and he did go on to send a brilliant message on his Instagram account after the game.
He penned: “What a team. Like I said, I came to win titles. Thank you and good night! #COYS.” It was certainly a message that went down well with Tottenham fans.
What comes next for Werner remains to be seen. His Tottenham loan deal comes to a conclusion at the end of June and it is not clear yet what the future holds for him at parent club RB Leipzig.
One thing for sure is that Werner will return to Germany with a Europa League winners’ medal around his neck following Tottenham’s European triumph.
