Former Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe posted on social media immediately after the French side romped to Champions League glory against Inter Milan. The Real Madrid superstar was forced to watch on as his old club put the Italian side to the sword with a 5-0 triumph.
The Frenchman left for the Spanish capital last summer after failing to guide the Parisians to the elusive elite European competition, playing alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar. PSG beat Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool on course to their historic night in Munich with Desire Doue starring with two goals and an assist.
Saturday’s emphatic win meant that Luis Enrique guided the Ligue 1 giants to the treble after their league and domestic cup success.
And minutes after the final whistle, Mbappe sent a message to his former club and teammates.
“The big day has finally arrived.
“Victory and with the manner of a whole club.
“Congratulations PSG.”
Arsenal were one of the many clubs linked throughout a long-running transfer saga involving Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
The Gunners’ Premier League rivals, Liverpool, were also the topic of intense speculation but it soon became abundantly clear that Los Blancos were his most likely destination.
Mbappe did perform a U-turn and remain at PSG following talks with Real Madrid but he eventually joined on a free transfer last summer.
It has been a difficult first season for Mbappe in La Liga. Not only did they fail to win the Champions League, suffering elimination to Arsenal in the quarter-finals, but they also fell short behind Barcelona in the league and cup.
For Mbappe, he was forced to watch his former club lift the famous trophy after he inspired them to league and domestic cup success, scoring 256 goals in 308 appearances, but failed to land the big prize.
“I’ve joined the best club in the world and the biggest club in history through humility and ambition,” he said at his unveiling in July.
“These are the values of the club: humility, ambition and winning.
“The priority is to adapt well to the team.
“When that happens, everything will be much easier.
“I want to adapt as quickly as possible.
“I came close to signing two and three years ago, but that’s part of football life. The past is behind me and I only think about the present.
“Today is a day that will mark my whole life.”
