Viktor Gyokeres will not join up with his national side ahead of their upcoming matches with Hungary and Algeria. Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the Sweden international who has recorded close to 100 goals for Sporting CP across the last two seasons.

Gyokeres has suffered a minor injury that he needs to rehabilitate, and in consultation with the medical team, it has been concluded that he cannot play in their two upcoming games, national team’s press officer Petra Thorén said. Naturally, the Swede will be looking after his health carefully amid links to a summer move.

Gyokeres will not want to suffer or worsen any existing injuries, putting any move into doubt. Arsenal are considering Gyokeres but also appreciate Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, football.london understands.

If the 26-year-old is hoping to win the race to become the Gunners’ new number nine, he will not want to endanger or risk that in any way. Arsenal are very conscious of their investments for the summer and have already seen wide target Nico Williams suffer a problem while with the Spanish national side.

Former Coventry City teammate, Leo Ostigard, made a video call to the striker whilst on a recent episode of the Flymodus podcast. The opportunity was not missed in asking Gyokeres whether he could be an Arsenal player next season.

He jested: “No, we will see. Nobody knows anything yet. I wish I had a more fun answer but that is all I can say for now.”

As Ostigard signed off from the call, he asked to be kept updated on when ‘everything is signed and sorted down at Arsenal’.

“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Gyokeres replied, clearly being jokey in his response. Yet it was certainly something to spark excitement amongst those Arsenal fans who would love to see the player in the red and white next season.
