Crystal Palace could soon hand Chelsea a boost amid their hopes of re-signing defender Marc Guehi this summer, with the Eagles on the lookout for a potential replacement.
Oliver Glasner’s side have been linked with Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga. The centre-back has been with the Championship club for 18 months – spending an initial six months on loan before then making his move permanent on a free transfer last summer.
However, as part of that deal, it has been reported that Tanganga has a £1.2million release clause, which Premier League clubs can activate. The Express reckon that Palace are one of four clubs considering activating the clause.
The Eagles are said to face competition from newly-promoted trio Sunderland, Leeds United and Burnley. Palace are likely to have the edge over the three clubs due to their stability in the Premier League and the fact that they are able to offer European football next season.
The report says that Tanganga would like his future resolved by the end of the month, meaning that things could move quickly. If Palace are able to sign the defender in this window, then it could make them more open to a sale for 23-cap England international Guehi.
That would be a boost to Chelsea’s hopes. The Blues, however, do have competition from the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, who incidentally sold Tanganga to Millwall.
Guehi has one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, meaning that Palace risk losing him for nothing in 12 months time should they not cash in this summer. The club are said to have rejected a bid worth around £70million from Tottenham in the January transfer window.
If they are, however, able to bring in a replacement in the summer window, then the club may be more open to making a sale. The Tanganga race is therefore one that Chelsea may be keeping a close eye on over the next few weeks – as their own transfer plans come together.
