Arsenal would like to sign a new wide player in the summer transfer window although it is not their biggest transfer priority under new sporting director Andrea Berta.

football.london understands the Gunners want to sign a new back-up goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker, with a wide forward also on the list if the opportunity arises.

Bringing five new players in would be something of a dream transfer window for manager Mikel Arteta, who knows he needs signings in order to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, both of whom have already made three big-name signings each.

Arsenal are yet to make their first move, although deals to see Kepa Arrizabalaga arrive in a £5million deal from Chelsea and Martin Zubimendi come in for £55million from Real Sociedad should be completed early in July.

But while City have got a lead on Arsenal when it comes to signings so far Pep Guardiola could actually do his old friend Arteta a massive favour in completing a deal for a third player this summer.

Rodrygo has been linked with a move to Arsenal from Real Madrid having missed out on the last three squads of the La Liga season under Carlo Ancelotti.

He started the Club World Cup clash against Al-Hilal under new head coach Xabi Alonso in the United States of America, but was hooked on 65 minutes and was an unused substitute in the second group game against Pachuca.

Real take on RB Salzburg in the early hours of Friday morning, knowing that depending on their result they could play either City or Juventus in the last 16 encounter, providing they do not lose to the Austrian side.

FIFA guidelines suggest players should have a three-week uninterrupted break following the end of the season and Rodrygo is likely to go on holiday once Real Madrid’s participation in the tournament ends.

If Real Madrid do take on City in the last 16 and are knocked out on June 30 or July 1, Rodrygo would immediately go on holiday and Arsenal would have three weeks to negotiate a fee with Los Blancos and then discuss personal terms with the Brazilian star upon his return.

Arsenal travel out to Asia for their pre-season tour on July 19 and Rodrygo would likely miss the start, given a three-week break, but could meet up with his new teammates soon after their arrival.
