Myles Lewis-Skelly has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal after breaking into the side last season. The length of the deal is understood to run until 2030, representing a five-year commitment for the 18-year-old.
The deal comes as a reward for the youngster’s exceptional progress for the club, which saw him earn a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s England senior squad, where he would score on his debut. Lewis-Skelly made 23 appearances in the Premier League, scoring against Manchester City in the impressive 5-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium and finishing the season having appeared 39 times for the club.
He has cemented himself as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back despite the summer arrival of Riccardo Calafiori for more than £40million, including add-ons. He is expected to continue in the role for the foreseeable future, despite further club links to defensive reinforcement.
Speaking upon the signing of his new deal he said to Arsenal official website: “I’m so proud and happy. I know those words are simple, but I think they sum up how I feel signing for this club. I’m a fan, and it’s like a dream come true.
“I’ve embodied the values of Hale End and come through. I’ve still got a lot of years ahead of me, so if I can keep staying humble and being a good person, that’s the most important thing to me.
“I know I’ve taken a lot of experience from the games about the positive moments, the mistakes that I’ve made. I’m definitely more ready now for the next season. I just want to keep learning and keep improving.
“I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that’s always learning and stays grounded, which is so important.”
Lewis-Skelly follows Gabriel Magalhaes in signing a new contract as new sporting director Andrea Berta continues his work on the Arsenal squad. Talks are ongoing with William Saliba and Bukayo Saka, football.london understands, as the club hope to extend their key starts in the group.
