Valencia skipper Jose Gaya has spoken out about the speculation surrounding team-mate Cristhian Mosquera amid an undisclosed bid for the promising defender from Arsenal.
The 21 year old centre-back, who played a pivotal role in Spain’s journey to the quarterfinals in the under-21 European Championship, is reportedly high on the transfer wishlist of the North London club, with their initial approach declined due to Valencia standing firm. With Mosquera’s contract set to expire in a year, the situation remains tense.
Arsenal remains determined to sign the right-footed Mosquera, as they seek to bolster their defensive line during the summer transfer period. Interest in Mosquera isn’t limited to the Gunners; Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, and RB Leipzig are all understood to admire him.
Mosquera isn’t the sole gem in Valencia’s ranks eyed by clubs. The futures of Javi Guerra and Cesar Tarrega also hang in the balance amidst outside attention, yet Gaya is eager for them to resist the overtures.
While speaking with A Punt, the Spanish outlet, Gaya expressed his wishes: “I would be delighted if all three could stay because I think they can give a lot this new season and bring a lot of joy to the fans.”, reports the Mirror.
“As of today, unless there’s any breaking news, I think all three of them are still with us, and I hope it continues like this, and they continue to grow as players.”
Valencia are determined to secure Cristhian Mosquera on a new contract, with no plans to offload him or his teammates this transfer window. However, they face a challenge as the 21 year old has reportedly agreed personal terms with Arsenal, who are keen on his versatility in defence.
Cristhian Mosquera’s representative, Sergio Barila, has confirmed that the player is content at Valencia, a club that has recently managed to obtain the necessary funds to finish their new stadium project. Barila also mentioned that negotiations for a contract renewal are in progress.
Mosquera, who joined Valencia at the tender age of 12, has always been tipped for success. Academy coach Miguel-Angel Angulo praised the youngster, saying: “He is characterised by a physical condition and good technical qualities, powerful in the air, and mature for his age.”
The young defender was part of the Spanish squad that clinched gold at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 and made 41 appearances for Valencia last season. He also featured for the full match when Spain’s under-21s were knocked out by England in the quarter-finals of the Euros.
