Mikel Arteta looks to have finally got his man. After a summer of rumours and constant speculation, Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Sporting CP to sign Viktor Gyokeres.
Andrea Berta quickly identified the 27-year-old as his ideal target and after initial discussions with RB Leipzig over a deal for Benjamin Sesko, it became apparent that Gyokeres only wanted Arsenal. On Sunday, Sporting confirmed that an agreement with the Gunners had been reached, with the north Londoners agreeing to pay £54.8million (€63.5million) guaranteed plus £8.6million (€10million) in add-ons, as per The Athletic.
It’s been reported that Gyokeres’ agent has waived his fee to help facilitate the deal. football.london understands that discussions between the two clubs accelerated over the weekend and Berta was always optimistic a deal would be done. Gyokeres will likely fly to London in the coming days to complete a medical with Arteta always wanting the new signing to be announced before the squad fly to Singapore on Saturday, July 19.
Gyokeres could be one of potentially three signings announced this week. Noni Madueke is expected to complete a move from Chelsea in a deal worth £52million. The winger left the Blues’ Club World Cup camp before their final win over PSG on Sunday to ensure the deal goes ahead, with an announcement expected early this week.
Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera could be the third player to arrive this week, with the 21-year-old keen to be playing his football at Emirates Stadium during the 2025/26 season, football.london understands. Arsenal have already had a bid rejected for the the young defender but it appears likely that another offer could be made very soon.
According to football writer and broadcaster Henry Winter, five players could finalise exits this week, too. Writing on X on Sunday morning, Winter said: “On train into Kings X for @talkSPORT show. Should be a good week for Arsenal. Madueke and Mosquera in. Gyokeres fee virtually agreed, just at the add-on debating stage, plus dealing with agent’s substantial cut (and Arsenal being strong on that point).
“Gyokeres obviously v keen to go to Arsenal (and will need a contrite farewell letter to Sporting). Maybe needs to have another word with his agent – get the deal done. Also busy week on potential outgoings, generating income from Kiwior, Nelson, Trossard, Vieira, Zinchenko.”
Jakub Kiwior, Reiss Nelson, Leandro Trossard, Fabio Vieira and Oleksandr Zinchenko could all move on should a buying club make a reasonable offer. All five could command decent fees and recoup some of the money spent on incomings this summer.
With the Arsenal squad jetting off to Asia in a matter of days, there’s still plenty of work to be done behind the scenes to ensure Arteta has the tools to challenge on all four fronts in the 2025/26 campaign. Gyokeres may only just be the start of an extremely busy week.
